Firas Zemzem: I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Policy Advocacy in Genetics and Genomics course

Firas Zemzem, PhD student at CHU Farhat Hached Sousse, shared on LinkedIn:

“Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Policy Advocacy in Genetics and Genomics course organized by Pan-African PGS Education and Research Initiative (PAPERI). This experience opened my eyes to the essential role that policy plays in guiding scientific progress—especially in the field of genetics and genomics.

Coming from a science background, I used to think the research spoke for itself. But this course helped me realize that science needs a voice—and that voice is advocacy.. So effective change only happens when research is paired with ethical responsibility, strategic communication, and a deep understanding of regulatory systems.

Some of the most powerful lessons I took away:

  •  Policy advocacy ensures that genetics research delivers real societal value.
  • Knowing how to navigate institutions and influence policy empowers scientists to become changemakers.
  • Building coalitions and engaging policymakers is just as important as running experiments.
  • Learning never stops – it continually shapes our sense of responsibility and purpose.

One of the highlights was being part of a debate session exploring a bold and timely question:
‘Should African militaries fund genetic research to enhance soldier performance and resilience?’

The discussion was intense and thought-provoking – raising questions about ethics, national priorities, and the future of science in Africa. It challenged everyone involved to think critically and speak from both scientific and human perspectives.

Huge gratitude to the Dr. Wafaa M Rashed, Chair and Founder of PAPERI team, Moderators, and all participants for fostering such a dynamic, inclusive, and eye-opening experience. The journey didn’t just expand knowledge – it built a network of future leaders committed to responsible genetics policy across the continent.

A heartfelt thank you to Wijden Moumni, my counterpart from the negative team, for the respectful, thought-provoking exchange during the debate. Gratitude as well to all the amazing participants in the course…”
