Evelyn Jiagge: Catalyzing Cancer Research in Africa – A Transformative Three-Day Symposium in Accra

Evelyn Jiagge, Assistant Scientist/Professor at Henry Ford Cancer Institute/Henry Ford Health System, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Catalyzing Cancer Research in Africa: A Transformative Three-Day Symposium in Accra

From July 22–24, 2025, over 223 cancer researchers, clinicians, and scientists from 28 African countries gathered in Accra, Ghana, for the Precision Medicine for Aggressive Breast Cancer – PMABC/ AORTIC- Africa AORTIC Basic and Translational Cancer Research Symposium, under the theme: “Catalyzing Basic and Translational Cancer Research in Africa: Advancing Progress and Capacity Building.”

This transformative event – organized by Precision Medicine for Aggressive Breast Cancer (PMABC) in partnership with AORTIC was designed to strengthen African-led research, promote collaboration, and develop sustainable infrastructure for cancer research across the continent.

Day 1 supported by Pfizer Global Medical Grants (institute for Translational Equitable Medicine, ITEM, featured a fully packed early career research workshop attended by 120 emerging scientists.

Sessions covered:

· Establishing a cancer research career in Africa
· Scientific communication, publication writing, and grant development
· Laboratory infrastructure, research compliance, and translational science
· Highly interactive roundtable discussions on drug discovery, biobanking, team science, and more.

Day 2 and 3 brought together global experts and African thought leaders to spotlight:

· Innovative African cancer research initiatives (PMABC, AORTIC, AACR updates)
· Research training and mentorship models
· Advances in organ site research (breast, prostate, colon, hepatobiliary, cervical)
· The role of AI and data science in cancer research
· Clinical trials, immunotherapy, and sustainable funding in LMICs.

With over 100 abstract presentations – both oral and poster – participants had rich opportunities for peer learning and international exposure.

PMABC proudly funded 70 African early-career researchers and speakers to attend and actively contribute to the symposium. This event was not just a scientific meeting—it was a campaign toward building Africa’s cancer research ecosystem with equity, innovation, and sustainability at its core.

The momentum is real. The collaborations are growing. The future of cancer research in Africa is here—and it is bold, collaborative, and African-led.”
