Day 3 of 2025 European Week Against Cancer: Association of ECL Calls for EU-Wide Action on Medicine Access
Association of European Cancer Leagues shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It’s Day 3 of the European Week Against Cancer – and today we are talking about equal access to medicines
Access to life-saving medicines shouldn’t depend on where you live. But across Europe, it often does. Here are 3 key reasons we need ambitious, EU-wide action to close the treatment gap:
1. Unequal access is a daily reality. Between 2019 and 2022, cancer patients in Germany had access to 46 of 48 EU-approved medicines. In Lithuania? Just 3.
2. High prices block access. Life-saving treatments are often unaffordable for countries with limited health budgets.
3. Not all patients get the medicines they need. For rare cancers or smaller groups of patients, developing treatments isn’t commercially interesting – leaving critical needs unmet.
It’s time to make access to cancer care a shared European priority. We are calling on EU and national decision-makers to:
– Put patients before profit
– Launch joint procurement mechanisms
– Improve availability and affordability of medicines across all EU countries.Learn more about our work on equal access to medicines for all cancer patients.”
