Emad Shash: Proud to see our collaborative work as one of the ESMO Breast Cancer 2025 highlights
Emad Shash, Leading Cancer Researcher and Director at National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, shared a post by Loay Kassem, Assistant Professor of Clinical Oncology at Kasr AlAiny School of Medicine, adding:
“Proud to see our collaborative work featured today as one of the ESMO Breast Cancer 2025 highlights by Prof. Suzette Delaloge.
Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) is not a second-best alternative. This meta-analysis — covering 17 studies and over 9 million women — confirms that CBE detects breast cancer at a rate of 1.4 per 1,000 exams, improves detection by 60% compared to no screening, and performs impressively close to mammography.
Honored to have been part of this impactful project with Loay Kassem, Jack A., Kyrillus Shohdy, Hamdy Azim, Hesham El Ghazaly, and Hatem Amin.
This is a strong message for global equity in breast cancer screening — and a reminder that evidence-based solutions exist even when mammography is not available or accepted.”
Quoting Loay Kassem‘s post:
“Mammography is not the only method to screen for breast cancer.
Whether in high income or low income countries, early detection through clinical breast exam (CBE), succeeded to detect breast cancers at a rate of 1.4/1000 exams.
I am honoured to have worked on this meta-analysis of 17 studies and more than 9 million women. Thanks for the great efforts by Jack A., Kyrillus Shohdy and the wonderful team Hamdy Azim, Emad Shash, Hesham El Ghazaly, Hatem Amin, we could prove that screening by CBE is 60% better than no screening (OR 1.59) and a 24% less than screening Mammography. Thanks professor Suzette Delaloge for highlighting our study in her presentation at the ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology Breast cancer 2025 takeaways session.
From now on, we have enough evidence to adopt CBE not only in resource-limited settings (where mammography is not easily accessible), but also where mammography is accessible and the woman is refusing or not comfortable to comply to annual tests.
Please share with your colleagues working in the field of breast cancer.”
