“Obesity and Colorectal Cancer: New Research Insights
A study published in JAMA Network Open highlights that the impact of obesity on colorectal cancer (CRC) risk cannot be accurately estimated using body mass index (BMI) alone. Measures of central obesity, such as waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), are stronger indicators of cancer risk.
Study Details
– The study analyzed data from 458,543 participants in the UK Biobank.
– Over nearly 12 years of follow-up, 5,944 participants were diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
– Key finding: Obesity measured by WHR and WC showed a stronger association with colorectal cancer risk than BMI.
Results
– Population attributable fraction (PAF) of CRC linked to BMI: 9.9%
– PAF linked to WC and WHR: 17.3% and 17.6%, respectively
Focusing on central obesity indicators like waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio is crucial for effective cancer prevention strategies. Combating the obesity epidemic offers a significant opportunity to reduce colorectal cancer risk.
