Dr. Michael A. Caligiuri: A Lifetime of Leadership, Now at the Helm of AACR

Some people spend their lives not just doing their job—but transforming the world around them. Dr. Michael A. Caligiuri is one of those people.

He’s not only a world-renowned cancer researcher and physician, but also a leader whose work has shaped the future of cancer care. And now, his journey takes a new turn: Dr. Caligiuri has just been elected Treasurer of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

It’s more than a title. It’s a recognition of decades spent pushing the boundaries of science, mentoring the next generation, and always keeping patients at the center of it all.

Dr. Michael A. Caligiuri: A Life Devoted to Science and Patients

Dr. Caligiuri currently serves as a professor in the Division of Leukemia at City of Hope, one of the nation’s leading cancer centers. He’s not new to leadership—he previously served as President of City of Hope, and before that, as President of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of The James Cancer Hospital.

Throughout his career, he’s led with both vision and empathy, advancing the field of immunotherapy, especially through his groundbreaking work on natural killer (NK) cells, which play a key role in helping the immune system fight cancer.

But if you ask anyone who’s worked with him, they’ll likely mention more than just his research. They’ll talk about the time he took to mentor young scientists. The passion he brings to every conversation. The genuine care he shows for every patient and every colleague.

What Makes AACR So Important

AACR is the world’s first and largest organization dedicated to cancer research. With over 58,000 members across more than 140 countries, it brings together scientists, doctors, policymakers, and patient advocates—people who are all working toward one goal: to prevent and cure cancer.

AACR doesn’t just organize major conferences and publish leading journals—it helps drive progress by funding innovative research and supporting scientists around the world. In many ways, it’s the heart of global cancer research.

And now, with Dr. Caligiuri stepping in as Treasurer, AACR has gained a leader who understands both the science and the human side of the mission.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

The City of Hope summed it up beautifully in a recent LinkedIn post:

Congratulations to Michael A Caligiuri, M.D., on his election as treasurer of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)!
Dr. Caligiuri, past president of City of Hope and professor in the Division of Leukemia, Department of Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, at City of Hope, brings world-renowned expertise and visionary leadership to this prestigious role.”

It’s a proud moment not only for Dr. Caligiuri, but for everyone who believes in the power of science, leadership, and hope.

Looking Ahead

As Treasurer of AACR, Dr. Caligiuri will help guide the organization’s financial strategy, ensuring that critical funding continues to flow toward the research, ideas, and people who are changing the way we treat cancer.

But more than that, his presence in this role sends a powerful message: that the future of cancer research is in capable, compassionate hands.

A Legacy in Motion

Dr. Caligiuri’s journey is far from over. With every step he takes—from the lab to the leadership table—he continues to inspire, mentor, and advocate for a better world for cancer patients.
