Douglas Flora: My journey in oncology and what drives my work
Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“For those who’ve asked about my journey in oncology and what drives my work, I shared a deeply personal piece on my Substack this morning.
Here’s a glimpse:
‘My work in the second half of my career seems to be moving me to try and scale these messages to larger and larger audiences… If I had unlimited resources, this is where they would be best spent: screening and early detection, better health literacy, and access…
Hope lives there. That’s the fuel we burn here every day.’
This article goes deeper than any interview I’ve done – exploring not just what we do as cancer doctors, but why we do it. It’s about the evolution of my thinking, the profound impact of early detection, and the burning drive to make these life-saving tools accessible to everyone.
Want to understand how cancer doctors think and feel about their work? This one’s for you.

And thanks, Savio Clemente for your fantastic questions.”
