Dégi László Csaba: A Monumental Week at ASCO 2025
Dégi László Csaba, Full Professor at UBB, ECO President, IPOS Secretary, Ombudsman, APSCO President, and FSAS Ph.D. Director, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A MONUMENTAL WEEK AT ASCO 2025!
As President of the European Cancer Organisation, I am profoundly proud of our leadership team’s crucial work in Chicago to advance cancer care and advocate for patients and professionals worldwide.
On Friday, I joined Elisabetta Zanon, ECO CEO, for a significant Global Cancer Fund Stakeholder’s Meeting, setting the stage for strategic initiatives, together with Dr. Eric Small who has officially begun his term as ASCO President for 2025–26. The day concluded with the prestigious President’s Dinner and the vibrant OncoDaily Party 2025 – Yvonne Awards, providing invaluable opportunities to network and strengthen bonds with leading oncology figures from around the globe.
Saturday brought a particularly poignant meeting: the Ukrainian Delegation Meeting. It was a profound honor to co-chair this vital session with Arman Kacharian from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. We were joined by Lynn Schuchter, ASCO Chair of the Board; Elisabetta Zanon, ECO CEO; and Doug Pyle, ASCO VP, Center for Global Impact. We heard firsthand about the urgent desire for Ukrainian healthcare professionals to be a stronger part of international medical education communities and the significant issue of clinical trial reduction, with powerful testimony on its human impact on Ukrainian cancer patients.
On Sunday, our discussions continued with stakeholders like the American Cancer Society, where Norbert and I engaged directly on key advocacy initiatives. The ACS Red, White and Blue Reception and the President’s Reception provided further crucial networking opportunities with top leaders in the field. I also had the chance to meet with ECO members on site for a dinner, Eric Van Cutsem and Fatima Carduso, alongside the team, to discuss our ongoing strategies and future directions.
Monday was exceptionally impactful. I was honored to co-chair the ASCO-COSA-ECO Joint Meeting on Healthy Work Environments and Cultures. Alongside Sabe Sabesan President of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) and Eric Winer, ASCO Chair of the Board, Cary Adams the Chief Executive Officer of UICC and our global team we collaboratively discussed new global principles for creating safer, more supportive oncology workplaces.
Immediately following, I participated in a vital ASCO/ECO Leadership Meeting with Dr. Robin Zon, ASCO President; Dr. Julie Gralow, ASCO Chief Medical Officer; and Doug Pyle, ASCO VP. With Elisabetta, Richard, Norbert, and Fanny, we focused on strengthening synergies between the U.S. and Europe on critical topics such as the oncology workforce, artificial intelligence in cancer care, common policy alignment, and the vital work of ECO’s International Committee.
My ASCO journey culminated in the powerful World Oncology Leaders Reunion. We engaged in productive discussions aimed at ensuring cancer policy remains a global priority and that patients are not left behind, especially amidst current global uncertainties.”
