Dégi László Csaba: EU’S budget 2028-2034 – Making cancer an investment priority

Dégi László Csaba, Full Professor at UBB, ECO President, IPOS Secretary, Ombudsman, APSCO President, and FSAS Ph.D. Director, shared a post on LinkedIn:

EU’S budget 2028-2034
Making cancer an investment priority
It’s budget time in Brussels. The European Union has begun discussing its spending priorities for the period 2028–34. In an era of significant political upheaval, early signs point to a reshuffling of EU priorities. The European cancer community cannot afford to sit back and wait. Together, we must deliver one message loud and clear: Cancer must remain an unwavering political priority for the European Parliament.
We have come such a long way. EU investments in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Research Mission on Cancer are already bearing fruit:
  •  Stronger legislation on cancer prevention
  •  Significant progress towards eliminating HPV-related cancers
  •  Support for expanding and enhancing screening programmes across Member States
  •  Greater pan-European infrastructures, including the EU Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres and Cancer Image Europe
  • Novel training programmes for the cancer workforce
  • Pioneering research projects to address some of the most pressing needs in cancer care
  • New tools designed to support the millions of cancer survivors in Europe too often overlooked in existing policy frameworks
A promising start, to be sure. But we need to now build on these achievements to realise their full potential.
With potentially more than two years of budget negotiations ahead of us, we must:
  •  Promote the success of current EU investments in cancer
  •  Demonstrate how they align with broader EU goals
  • Recommend how future resources could further strengthen cancer care, research, and innovation
To this end, the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) will increase its direct engagement on the 2028–2034 EU budget, starting with a formal response to the European Commission’s current consultation on the Multiannual Financial Framework.”
