Dégi László Csaba reflects on his ECO Presidency and Romania’s cancer challenges on national TV
Dégi László Csaba, President of the European Cancer Organisation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Tomorrow, March 24, at 15:00, on the Romanian national television, you can watch a captivating interview that explores the most important questions in the fight against cancer. In 2022, I was elected President of the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) for the 2023-2026 term – what motivated me back then, and where do we stand now?
In Romania, the cancer mortality rate is far above the EU average, while in Western countries, 80-85% of patients survive. Why is there such a huge gap, and what can we do?
We will discuss the National Cancer Control Plan, adopted in 2022: Is it still in effect, and what are its strengths and weaknesses? Is it true that the patient is at the center, as I once said: ‘The patient is the center, and the cancer story belongs to all of us’?
European guidelines focus on prevention, early detection, treatment, and improving quality of life – how well does this work in practice in our country? Financial support, accurate data, and the psycho-oncology network – where do we stand, and why do we often seek treatment abroad in critical situations?
We will also discuss emotional support for patients and their families, doctor-patient communication, medical training, and the dilemma between public and private healthcare. Is our society ready for a cancer control plan that could radically improve statistics over the next decade?
