“The drive up to Butaro last December was a familiar one: a bumpy ride, flanked by lush, terraced hills, and the smell of eucalyptus rushing through the car windows. A road taken many times with Paul, back when BUTARO HOSPITAL was a construction site and University of Global Health Equity only an idea.

It has been 2 years since Dr. Paul Farmer passed away. Not a day has gone by since that I haven’t counted my lucky stars to have known him, to have worked with him, learned from him, and to have been accompanied by him over many years.

With my thanks to Emmanuel Kamanzi and team for making this visit happen, for the opportunity to plant a redwood in Paul’s honor, and for keeping his legacy alive.”
