Children’s Cancer Institute: Every child’s chance at a cure begins with research – and research begins with funding
Children’s Cancer Institute shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Every child’s chance at a cure begins with research – and research begins with funding.
We are incredibly grateful for the Federal Government’s support for Australia’s medical research to date, including their recent announcement of $112.6 million over three years to support the continuation and expansion of the Zero Childhood Cancer Program (ZERO).
This funding will help us continue to lead the world in precision medicine for children with cancer, giving hope to families around the country facing this devastating diagnosis.
However, the broader medical research sector – including Children’s Cancer Institute – continues to face significant challenges.
For every dollar received through National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) grants, a further 64 cents is needed to cover the full costs of research.
This gap includes the chronic underfunding of researcher salaries and indirect research costs, such as specialist equipment, technology platforms, laboratory maintenance, and essential support services.
These hidden costs are rising fast, and every year, institutes like ours must work harder to bridge the funding gap.
Without action, there is a real risk that vital research will slow, and that future innovations – the kind that save lives – may never reach the patients who need them most.
We proudly stand with the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) in calling for greater support for our sector. Together, we can ensure that Australia’s world-class medical research continues to deliver life-changing breakthroughs, now and into the future.”
