Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Elimination of Cervical Cancer by 2030 Is Within Reach and Possible
Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, UICC President-Elect of 2024-2026 and a Founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The momentum to eliminate cervical cancer is constantly growing. To further accelerate this, the 2nd Global Cervical Cancer Elimination Forum held in Bali, Indonesia, co-hosted by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and UNICEF It brought together governments, donors, civil society, private sector, and global health advocates towards the World Health Organization 2030 targets.
Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) had a strong presence and played a central role in the program, leading key sessions on community engagement, capacity building, and mobilizing civil society organizations to hold stakeholders accountable. This was strongly reflected in our commitment statement read by head of capacity building, Kirstie Graham.
At the advocacy sessions, using the recent successes in Nigeria, particularly the national launch of the Partnership to Eliminate Cervical Cancer in Nigeria (pECCiN), I highlighted our recent achievements. These include 73% HPV coverage through vaccination of over 13.6 million girls, and our presidential (PVAC) initiative to expand local HPV testing capacity. Nigeria’s accomplishments emphasize how political commitment and innovation can drive sustainable progress.
At the forum, I delivered the opening keynote, participated in Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance civil society roundtable, and contributed to a critical plenary on countering misinformation all with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) ethos at the heart: collaboration, equity, and patient-centered advocacy are non-negotiable.
The 2025 forum featured bold commitments: Roche expanded affordable HPV DNA testing to 106 countries, Unitaid pledged $50M for screening acceleration, and Australia’s EPICC Consortium added $5M to Indo-Pacific efforts. Indonesia’s vibrant Minister of Health, Dr Budi Gunadi Sadikin outlined a proactive, nationally owned elimination plan already underway.
It was energizing to reconnect with global partners and reaffirm that elimination by 2030 is within reach and possible.
And yes, I did squeeze in a spa visit, picked up nice batik pieces but was greatly relieved to depart Bali safely just after the volcanic eruptions of Mount Lewotobi Laki‑laki.
