Cary Adams’ Keynote Message at Parliament House in Canberra – UICC

Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) shared a post by McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, adding:

“Dr Cary Adams, CEO, UICC, delivered a keynote message at Parliament House in Canberra, Australia, calling on governments to prioritise an ambitious declaration at the UN High-level Meeting on NCDs in September to drive change.

Thank you to The George Institute for Global Health and McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer for hosting this important event in the lead-up to the meeting.”

Quoting McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer‘s post:

“Dr Cary Adams, CEO, UICC, was keynote speaker at an Australian Parliamentary breakfast hosted by the The George Institute for Global Health and the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, held at Parliament House in Canberra yesterday.

“If we don’t urge for an ambitious HLM4 Political Declaration on NCDs and mental health the burden will increase both in terms of cancer cases being diagnosed at a late stage and deaths from cancer. And the inequities between and within countries will also be exacerbated. So, in the lead up to the UN High-level meeting on NCDs – we’re calling on Governments to prioritise an ambitious declaration to drive change,” Cary said.

The parliamentary event’s focus was on Australia’s role in accelerating action to tackle the global health threat of non-communicable diseases and mental health, and was held to contribute to discussions around upcoming UN High Level Meeting on NCDs.

We also heard insights from experts from DFAT, The George Institute for Global Health, The World Bank, The Australian National University, Health and Wellbeing Queensland.

We were joined by parliamentarians, senior government officials, health and development sector leaders, academia, civil society representatives, and members of the cancer and NCD community.”
