Alexandre Chan: Can a Team-based Approach Transform Cancer Survivorship Care?
Alexandre Chan, Founding Chair and Professor of Clinical Pharmacy Practice at UCI School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Can a team-based approach transform cancer survivorship care?
Our RCT ‘BASIC’ trial, led by Dr. Yu Ke at National Cancer Centre Singapore says yes—and the results are very promising. We just published our study in International Journal of Behavioral Medicine.
Breast cancer survivors who received shared care—a collaboration between oncologists, primary care physicians, and pharmacists—reported:
– Better social functioning
– Fewer physical symptoms
– Higher activity levelsWith a 96% retention rate and 86% willing to continue with shared care, this model proves both feasible and well-received.
It’s time to rethink survivorship: coordinated care isn’t just possible—it’s powerful.
Next stop: a full-scale RCT targeting survivors with more complex needs.
Thanks SingHealth Polyclinics and Watsons Singapore for collaborating on this study! And National University of Singapore NIHA program for funding this piece of work back in 2018.”
