Dr. Rakesh K. Jain receives AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research
For over four decades, Dr. Rakesh K. Jain has redefined the landscape of cancer research through relentless curiosity, innovative thinking, and a passion for improving patients’ lives. In recognition of his extraordinary impact, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has honored him with the AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research—one of the most prestigious acknowledgments in oncology.
A Scientific Journey Rooted in Cancer Research and Innovation
Dr. Jain’s path began in Kanpur, India, where he pursued engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology. He then completed his master’s and PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Delaware. These early foundations would later fuel his pioneering approach to tumor biology—combining engineering principles with biomedical research to better understand and treat cancer.
Today, Dr. Jain serves as the director of the Edwin L. Steele Laboratories for Tumor Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital and is the Andrew Werk Cook Professor of Radiation Oncology (Tumor Biology) at Harvard Medical School.

When Engineering Meets Oncology: A Breakthrough Idea
In an era when antiangiogenic therapy was primarily aimed at destroying blood vessels feeding tumors, Dr. Jain introduced a bold new concept: vascular normalization. Rather than eliminating tumor vessels, he proposed restoring them to a more functional state. This innovation not only improved the effectiveness of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy but also led to FDA-approved drug combinations that transformed cancer treatment worldwide.
The Role of AACR in Advancing Cancer Science
Founded in 1907, the American Association for Cancer Research is the first and largest cancer research organization dedicated to accelerating the conquest of cancer. With over 58,000 members across 141 countries, AACR has long championed groundbreaking discoveries through research, education, communication, policy advocacy, and funding. Dr. Jain’s recognition by AACR is a testament to how his work aligns with the organization’s mission: to prevent and cure cancer through innovation and collaboration.
AACR’s annual meeting, where Dr. Jain will deliver his award lecture on Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m. CT, serves as the largest gathering of cancer researchers worldwide and highlights the most impactful science shaping the future of oncology.
Championing the Tumor Microenvironment
Dr. Jain was one of the earliest voices to highlight that tumors are not isolated clumps of cancer cells—they are complex microenvironments. His discoveries about abnormal blood and lymphatic vessels and their role in promoting tumor progression and treatment resistance helped lay the foundation for a new field of study. These insights have redefined how clinicians think about drug delivery and tumor biology.
To further foster education and mentorship, he launched a week-long course titled Critical Issues in Tumor Microenvironment: Angiogenesis, Metastasis and Immunology, which has run for 40 years at Harvard Medical School and become a cornerstone in cancer education.
A Mentor and Visionary
Since joining AACR in 1979, Dr. Jain has served on numerous committees, editorial boards, and conference programs. In 2020, he was elected as a Fellow of the AACR Academy, joining a distinguished group that includes Nobel laureates and leading scientists in cancer research.
His accolades include the National Medal of Science, awarded by President Barack Obama in 2016, along with honors from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the U.S., and the Indian National Science Academy.
The Ongoing Legacy of Dr. Rakesh K. Jain
Dr. Jain’s story is one of relentless pursuit—of truth, of understanding, and of better treatments for cancer patients. His work has transformed not only the science of cancer, but the lives of those affected by it.
Through its leadership, commitment, and global reach, AACR continues to support pioneers like Dr. Jain, advancing science through its publications, advocacy, and peer-reviewed research funding. As the Scientific Partner of Stand Up To Cancer, AACR helps drive high-impact, patient-focused research, ensuring that scientific discoveries translate into real-world outcomes.
As cancer research evolves, the foundation built by Dr. Jain remains a guiding light—a legacy of innovation, mentorship, and profound impact that will shape oncology for generations to come.
