Boris Pasche Celebrates Callum McGrath’s PhD Defense and AACR 2025 Presentations

Boris Pasche, President and CEO of the Karmanos Cancer Institute, shared Wake Forest Department of Biomedical Engineering’s post on LinkedIn, adding:

“Very proud of Callum McGrath who successfully defended his PhD thesis yesterday. His exciting work will be presented at AACR 2025 in two separate poster presentations:
Abstract 1028: Evaluating amplitude-modulated radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as a cancer screening modality
April 27 from 2-5 p.m., section 43, Board 3
Abstract 1833: Assessment of shifts in tumor-specific frequencies on the proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma cells
April 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., section 4, Board 19″

“Congratulations to SBES graduate student, Callum McGrath, on the successful defense of his PhD dissertation: “Investigating the Mechanisms of Action and Screening Utility of Amplitude-Modulated Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields for Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Callum’s research, conducted in the lab of Dr. Boris Pasche, focused on the therapeutic and diagnostic potential of amplitude-modulated radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (AM RF EMF), an FDA-approved, noninvasive treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). His research identified that AM RF EMF inhibits cancer cell proliferation through calcium influx mediated by the Cav3.2 calcium channel, though not through a resonance mechanism as previously hypothesized.
He also explored its potential as a screening tool by analyzing patient hemodynamic responses and applying machine learning, achieving high sensitivity and specificity for detecting both HCC and breast cancer. Callum’s work not only enhances our understanding of AM RF EMF’s mechanism of action but also supports its promise as a cost-effective and noninvasive cancer screening method.
A special thank you to Dr. Boris Pasche for his exceptional mentorship and guidance since 2020, which has been instrumental in shaping Callum’s academic and research journey!
Congratulations, Callum! Your future is incredibly bright, and we can’t wait to see all that you will accomplish.”
