Caitríona Duggan: Celebrating Cancer Nurses and Collaboration at Portiuncula
Caitríona Duggan, PhD Candidate of Vascular access devices for systemic anti-cancer therapy at the University of Galway, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today at Portiuncula University Hospital, we came together to celebrate ECND25 Beyond Borders, European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) a little early—recognising the incredible work of cancer nurses across Europe and, most importantly, within our own unit.
As an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Oncology for 10 years (and a cancer nurse for 24!), I’ve been privileged to witness the profound impact nursing teams have on patients and families during their most vulnerable moments. At Portiuncula, we are fortunate to have an exceptional team of nurses who lead our oncology department with skill and compassion, supported by Management and the outstanding oncologists from Galway University Hospital HSE West North West. What makes Portiuncula special is the collaboration and dedication of every staff member. Today was a testament to that—colleagues from across the hospital dropped by to learn from our experienced team, discuss nurse-led initiatives, and explore the research being published by our oncology nurses. It was a proud moment to showcase the innovation and expertise within our unit.
This year has brought challenges, but our team’s resilience and unity have been immense. As we mark ECND on May 18th, I want to celebrate every cancer nurse in Portiuncula—your empathy, expertise, and unwavering commitment make a difference every day. Great work by Cora Shaughnessy and Sarah Ennis bringing this together.
Here’s to shaping the future of cancer care, advocating for our profession, and continuing to provide compassionate, evidence-based care to those who need it most.”
