“A study conducted by researchers at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) has revealed that a high-fat diet can accelerate breast cancer metastasis in mice, emphasizing the potential role of dietary changes in cancer treatment strategies.
This new research, published in Nature Communications, revealed that a high-fat diet enhanced the creation of premetastatic niches (PMNs) in distant organs, such as the lungs, which provide an environment suitable for tumor cells to take root.
“These results anticipate a future in which dietary changes, together with the control of platelet activity, will complement anti-tumor treatments,” said senior author Héctor Peinado, PhD, head of CNIO’s microenvironment and metastasis group.
The link between obesity and an increased risk of breast cancer metastasis has been well established, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study specifically investigated how a high-fat diet influences the tumor microenvironment and supports metastatic progression.
The CNIO team focused on animal models of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a highly aggressive form that often metastasizes to the lungs.”
