Olubukola Ayodele: Spotlight on Breast Cancer – Cancer Conversations in the Black Community
Olubukola Ayodele, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Cancer Conversations in the Black Community: Spotlight on Breast Cancer
I’m excited to share that on Wednesday, 25th June, I’ll be the keynote speaker at the community engagement meeting at the African Caribbean Centre in Leicester, focused on one critical goal:
Breaking the silence around breast cancer in the Black community.
Far too often, cancer remains a taboo subject shrouded in fear, misinformation, and stigma. In the Black community, this silence can delay diagnosis, limit access to care, and ultimately lead to poorer outcomes.
That’s why this event matters.
It’s not a lecture, it’s a conversation. A space where we’ll talk openly, honestly and culturally safely about:
– Breast cancer symptoms and risk factors
– Why early detection matters
– The unique challenges Black women face, including later-stage diagnoses and treatment disparities
– How we can empower each other through knowledge, literacy and community action
As a breast oncologist and Black woman myself, this work is deeply personal. I’ve seen too many lives cut short, not because of the disease itself, but because of delayed action, shame, or lack of trust in the system.
This is about reclaiming our health stories. About ensuring that Black women are seen, heard, and supported not just in treatment rooms, but in communities.
This event is not just for women but for everyone because men get breast cancer too and men are a pillar of support needed.
So, whether you’re going through the journey, or a survivor, carer, health worker, community leader or just someone who wants to learn, this is for you.
Let’s talk about it. Let’s name it. Let’s change the narrative together.
Wednesday 25th June, 6pm
African Caribbean Centre, Leicester
