“Today is World Brain Tumour Awareness Day 2025
Celebrated annually on June 8th, it is a tribute to those diagnosed with a brain tumour and to their families. It is a call dedicated to raise awareness and the importance of research.
One critical aspect is understanding genetic tumour risk syndromes – conditions where inherited genetic variants significantly increase the risk of developing tumours, including Brain Tumours. Recognizing these risks can lead to earlier detection and better outcomes.
Several inherited syndromes caused by pathogenic variants increase the risk of developing brain tumours. The following syndromes are included in ERN GENTURIS:
Neurofibromatosis type 1
NF2-related schwannomatosis (very rare)
Lynch syndrome
Familial Adenomatous Polyposis
Li-Fraumeni syndrome / heritable TP53-related cancer (hTP53rc) syndrome
