Celebrating the Black Volunteer Caucus – ACS CAN
American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Have you met our amazing Black Volunteer Caucus (BVC)? The BVC was ACS CAN’s very first volunteer affinity group, leading the way for our now six groups! The BVC works with ACS CAN to enhance, strengthen, and diversify communications, messaging, partnerships, and volunteer engagement within the Black community.
The BVC advocates for eliminating cancer disparities that exist in the Black community. Recently, they have been focused on Breast Cancer. Did you know Black women have 5% lower breast cancer incidence than White women, but 38% higher mortality?
Breast cancer disparities like these are why the BVC teamed up with the other five affinity groups to host a virtual event on how breast cancer affects different communities.
Additionally, many of the BVC members are VOICES ambassadors. VOICES of Black Women is a pivotal long-term study led by the American Cancer Society to better understand health conditions like cancer and enhance overall well-being among Black women. Ambassadors of the study work to promote the study and help enroll new participants.
This Black History Month, we’re celebrating the Black Volunteer Caucus and the hard work they do to reduce cancer disparities in the Black community. With volunteers like these who persistently raise their voices in the face of inequality, we know we are one step closer to ending cancer as we know it, for everyone.
