Aruni Ghose: Are We Forgetting a Clear Need in Cancer Care

“Every month we hear Startup to Scale up in the Transatlantic Space in Health Tech.

Lets take a step back and look at Cancer in Africa – Are we forgetting a clear need there?

“60% of cancer patients worldwide are diagnosed in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In recent years, the African subcontinent has evidenced a progressive rise in the incidence of cancer diagnoses. According to African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) Inc.- Africa there was a 34% increase in uptake of MDTMs between 2013 and 2021.

Although there is an increase in utilisation, the mortality rates are disproportionately high, significantly more than Europe. Considerable centres do not have adequate access whereas those with access do not have adequate team members. Established barriers include the lack of specialists, motivation of the healthcare staff, poor financial remuneration, and government policies.” – Described by Quadri Sanni Abdulkadir M. james tsejime – “Cancer Multidisciplinary Teams in Africa: A Narrative Review of Their Role and Availability”Link.

I was taughted by my Mentors and Senior Colleagues Dr Olubukola Ayodele, Akash Maniam, Susie Stanway, Bhawna Sirohi, Martins Tanimola, Chinenye Iwuji, Miriam Mutebi, Omar Abdihamid, Sarah Adomah, Cancer Health Disparities – London Global Cancer Week (LGCW) about – Accessible, Affordable Cancer Care that can be scaled across the continuum with Common Sense Oncology and Collaboration at its centre to Leave No One Behind – Personalising and Not Standardising Inequalities is the way forward!

This is a Call to Action for Sustainable CancerTech – Can the OncoFlow Project Maryam Hasanova collaborate with the Medicaid Cancer Foundation Her Excellency and My Mentor Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu to leverage AI in Transforming the Cancer Care Continuum and henceforth Cancer Pathways and Policymaking in Africa
