Hannah and Arnold Freedman Reflect on Their Shared Journey at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute on 2025 Father’s Day

“When a patient notices the badge Hannah Freedman, BSN, RN, wears at work, they often say, “I know that name. Are you related to Dr. Freedman?” To that, Hannah smiles proudly and shares her fun fact: Arnold Freedman, MD, is her father.
“Some people may have trouble working with their parents, but for me it’s been the most wonderful arrangement possible,” says Hannah.
While a nursing student, Hannah was on a rotation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) on a floor that included Dana-Farber patients. As her parents suspected, she was drawn to the powerful connections that cancer care provided and later secured full-time positions in oncology nursing – first at BWH and then at Dana-Farber, where she wound up on the same floor as her father. They’ve now been working together as colleagues for 9 years. Although they’re now one floor apart, Hannah makes sure to work on Tuesdays, Arnold’s clinic days, so they can still visit each other.
“She’s smart and brings joy to patients, even when things are not so joyful,” Arnold says proudly. “We learn from each other. It’s been quite an extraordinary experience.”
This Father’s Day, Hannah and Arnold reflect on their shared journey with gratitude, feeling incredibly fortunate for the opportunity to work together.”
