Anietie Aliu: I have been nursing even while working as a clinical Nurse

Anietie Aliu, Postgraduate Researcher at University of Surrey, shared on LinkedIn:

“Delighted to share the story of the study I did to answer the question I have been nursing even while working as a clinical Nurse.

‘Why do Black women in the UK have negative outcomes of breast cancer more than women of other ethnicity and why are they not taking full advantage of the breast screening offered free to eligible age women.

As a Black woman researcher, it became my priority to find answers. I started by attending Black women and breast cancer/screening awareness conferences. I heard the voices of breast cancer survivors , it sounded conflicting to the evidences I have read. I began to reflect deeply why the contradictions.

I write a poem (I will be sharing later) ‘Do you really want to die?’. It seemed like a common question a researcher and health system would ask. But hearing the perspectives of the Black women, I realized there could be more than meet the eyes. I was more determined to find answers if there are any.

In a systematic review, I wanted to know what studies found as barriers to breast screening for Black women and if interventions were done to address those barriers and were they effective in addressing the issues?.

Glad to say that the study has recently been published, my story continues in the video podcast below and this is just the first part. I will be sharing the overwhelming media coverage of the findings.
