Andrea Manzano: Proud to have co-authored IHE Comparator Report on Cancer in Europe 2025

“Proud to have co-authored this flagship IHE – The Swedish Institute for Health Economics report supported by EFPIA – European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, which provides a pan-European comparison of cancer care across 31 countries. The report offers a broad comparison of cancer care across 31 European countries and reflects on how far they’ve come, while also pointing out what still needs to be done.
Here are some of the main findings:
– Since 1995, cancer cases have increased by 58%, reaching 3.2 million new cases in 2022
– Cancer mortality has stabilized since 2008, despite the rising number of cases
– On average, 6.6% of the total health expenditure in European countries is related to cancer. In 2023, indirect costs of cancer (€148 per capita) and direct costs of cancer (€275 per capita)
– Close to 200 new cancer medicines have been approved since 1995
– Indirect costs fell by €15 billion between 1995 and 2023, the decrease in indirect costs of cancer is primarily driven by increased survival rates and a reduction in premature deaths among the working-age population, leading to less productivity loss due to mortality
– Access gaps are narrowing: in 2023, the difference in uptake of new medicines between the highest and lowest countries was 3.3-fold, compared to 5.3-fold in 2018
– Access to molecular diagnostics (like NGS) is still uneven, but it’s crucial for using many of today’s targeted therapies
