Amy Peterson: What We Do in Any Moment of a Day Can Matter to So Many

Amy Peterson, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Exelixis and Board Member at Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I walked into the ASCO conference main entrance this morning and heard my own voice talking. I looked up to see that a video – made by Conquer Cancer Foundation (CCF) and in which I participated – was playing on the big screen and there I was, talking about the criticality of cancer research and the role CCF plays in funding that research. Wow! Humbling to see how what we do in any moment of a day can matter to so many.

I then went to the donor’s lounge to say hi to my fellow colleagues and saw the picture of Rizine- a young researcher in Malawi fighting to improve the lives of children with Burkitt lymphoma- who I, along with a few other friends, funded through a YIA. It’s incredibly moving to feel and see the impact of what a donation can mean to someone as far away as Africa but whose mission is close to my heart.

As I was leaving the lounge, I was asked to reflect on why I do what I do and who it is that I fight for… Molly!! I want to make more Mollys! Molly is my sister’s BFF since they were 5, and she is a survivor of grade IV GBM for > 12 yrs!! And take note that by survivor, I mean she lives independently and fully. I did a podcast with Dr. Mark Lewis, Molly and my sister, Martha, a few years ago and pasted the links to that podcast below for anyone interested in listening to what it takes from patients, physicians, researchers, family and friends to impact a person and their life struggle with this devastating diagnosis.
