Amil Družić: I had the privilege of participating in European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology pioneering “Immunotherapy” course
Amil Družić, Oncology and Radiotherapy Resident at the Clinical Center University of Sarajevo, posted on LinkedIn:
“Recently returned from Lisbon, where I had the privilege of participating in the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) ‘s pioneering ‘Immunotherapy’ course. Orchestrated under the leadership of Eric Deutsch and Udo Gaipl, the course was a comprehensive journey into immunotherapy, enriched by the expertise of Fernando Herrera, Michele Mondini, Jamie Honeychurch, Rianne Vaes, Claire Vanpouille-Box, Gosse Adema, Laurence Zitvogel, Guido Kroemer, and Olivier Lantz.
The journey was remarkable, beginning with the foundational principles of how our immune system combats cancer, and advancing to the forefront of how radiotherapy and immunology converge. We explored transformative topics in cancer care, from how ionizing radiation initiates an immune response to the intriguing process of macrophage reprogramming, and the emerging field of cancer vaccines, and many more. The course also emphasized the 6th R of Radiobiology: Reactivation of the Immune System, spotlighting this essential concept that integrates radiotherapy with immunotherapy.
Being deeply embedded in the world of clinical oncology, the insights I gained from this course felt like uncovering a treasure trove. The conversations we had went beyond textbook knowledge, offering a peek into the future of oncology – a future where the immune system is one of our most potent weapons against cancer.
Feeling thankful for this experience and the chance to rub shoulders with some of the brightest minds in the field. It’s moments like these that reaffirm my belief in the incredible strides we’re making in cancer care. Here’s to more breakthroughs and collaborations that will redefine the future of oncology!”
