Miriam Mutebi: Fresh Momentum for African Oncology Research Is Building, And We’re Here For It
Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Fresh momentum for African oncology research is building, and we’re here for it.
First, I hope you have dusted off your research hats and networking shoes in anticipation of the biggest Pan-African cancer conference.
A sneak peek suggests that the research being shared is truly diverse and bursting with homegrown solutions for African concerns.
Register early to take advantage of our early bird offers. Here is the link.
As part of AORTIC- Africa’s ongoing strategy to create stronger, more sustainable research ecosystems across the continent, we are rolling out new ways to disseminate African-led cancer research beyond our biennial conferences.
We’re actively working on several initiatives to make this vision a reality:
Revamping the AORTIC member portal and updating our website to provide more interactive, accessible spaces for members to share, learn, and collaborate.
Launching the AORTIC Journal, which will serve as a dedicated platform for publishing and exchanging African oncology research. This journal aims to foster a strong, interconnected community of researchers focused on advancing cancer care across Africa and beyond.
We’re also thrilled to be developing microgrants, small accelerator grants aimed at early-career researchers. These will provide critical seed funding to kickstart new ideas, enabling researchers to gather preliminary data and lay the foundation for larger, more impactful studies.
A heartfelt thank-you to Menghis Bairu of Bio Usawa (an African-based producer of monoclonal antibodies and precision medicine for advanced breast cancer), and PMABC- Henry Ford Center – Evelyn Jiagge for their generous pledges to support and jumpstart this initiative.
Their commitment is helping turn early-stage ideas into real-world research that will impact lives.
We had the opportunity to share these updates at the recent AORTIC Africa Reception, which brought together clinicians and researchers from across the continent, the diaspora, and the global community.
It was a powerful moment of reflection and renewal, and a chance to recommit to our strategic direction: building a more member-facing, research-supportive AORTIC.
PS: Early Bird tickets still available. Don’t miss out.
