Abhishek Shankar: It was an honour to participate in the International Scientific and Practical Conference
Abhishek Shankar, Secretary General at Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention (APOCP), shared on LinkedIn:
“It was an honour to participate in the International Scientific and Practical Conference titled ‘New Horizons of Oncological Care in the Republic of Kazakhstan: NROC — Advanced Technologies of the Future’, held from April 24–26, 2025, in Astana, Kazakhstan.
As an invited speaker, I had the privilege of sharing insights on lung cancer screening: LDCT and beyond, highlighting global advances and the way forward in early detection strategies with focus on LMICs.
A true highlight was visiting the National Research Oncology Center (NROC), a state of the art facility that has Central Asia’s first proton beam therapy unit alongside cutting-edge linear accelerators. It is inspiring to see Kazakhstan investing boldly in advanced cancer care technologies and infrastructure, setting new standards for the region. We need to learn to make cancer care as a priority in view of increasing incidence and mortality.
I had an hour long conversation with the Chairman of NROC on future collaborations in education, training, and teaching to strengthen cross-border capacity building efforts is the way forward for equitable cancer care in the region.
It was great to meet my friend Alisher Kahharov from Uzbekistan who was also a participating faculty and the one who introduced me to this conference organisers. It was good to see Elene Mariamidze.
A big thank you to the organizers for their warm hospitality and vision, especially very human and humble Azat Chinaliyev who made my stay so comfortable.”
