Abhijit Pal: An Incredible Panel of International and National Experts in Cancer Equity at ANZUP 2025
Abhijit Pal, Medical Oncologist at South Western Sydney Local Health District, posted on LinkedIn:
“Honoured to have been invited to co-chair the Health Equity session at ANZUP Cancer Trials Group Limited ASM with A/Prof Mei Ling Yap (also South Western Sydney Local Health District) yesterday afternoon – a super star panel
- Anne Savage – a tour de force on the inequities of prostate cancer care in Australia and a comparison to Hunger Games. Cancer care and dystopian cinema should not be in the same sentence, but unfortunately factors like postcode and private health insurance status continue to have disproportionate impacts on outcomes in prostate cancer
- Dr Nicky Lawrence – conducting decentralised clinical trials with Maori populations in NZ and demonstrating the power of true co-design/co-ownership in clinical research and finishing with the Maori saying – ‘With your food basket and my food basket the people will thrive’
- Marniza Saad – amazing overview of cancer inequities in Malaysia and the difficulties with accessing radiotherapy globally.
- A/Prof Bishal Gyawali – the global landscape where access to morphine or access to surgery are priorities for many LMIC as opposed to the latest innovations in cancer drug development (cancer groundshot + cancer moonshot!). Clear reminder that money does not simply translate into outcomes – funders need to think about what provides the most value.
Not in photo – Greg Pratt also presented on Aboriginal leadership in clinical research and clear reminders about the obligations of publicly funded research and Paul Zawa provided the patient voice which remains at the centre of all research.
An incredible panel of international and national experts in cancer equity – thank you for the invitation Haryana Dhillon and Carole Harris) and for putting together a fantastic panel and session and hopefully it remains a core part of the ANZUP ASM for years to come – and also plenty of scope for investment in cancer equity for other Australian trials groups and stakeholder.”
