The stars behind “Calories Against Childhood Cancer” event – Children’s Cancer Institute
Children’s Cancer Institute shared on LinkedIn:
“No one should have to go to the funeral of a 5-year-old girl. It’s inconceivable and truly heartbreaking.
In February 2024, Aria Zimmermann had her beautiful little life cut tragically short by T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.
Her parents, JZ and Chrissy had previously been members of Crossfit Marrickville, and when the gym’s owner, Gemma, got a glimpse into the world of childhood cancer through her conversations with Chrissy, she knew she wanted to help.
That’s where the idea for their ‘Calories Against Childhood Cancer’ event was born.
The event had a goal of honouring Aria on what would have been her 6th birthday on Saturday 22nd June, while raising awareness about childhood cancer and it’s impacts on families, and raising much needed funds to support the research we’re doing here at Children’s Cancer Institute, as well as to support to amazing work of Bear Cottage who looked after Aria while she was going through her gruelling cancer treatment.
What followed was a truly magical, heartfelt, community led event that touched the hearts of everyone involved. The Crossfit Marrickville team were blown away as they managed to raise over $100,000.
We are so grateful to every single person who made this incredible event a reality. Community efforts like this are so inspiring for our researchers as we know how much effort goes into every dollar raised. You are truly making a difference and helping our researchers in their tireless efforts to find kinder, more effective treatment options, and ultimately a cure for ALL children with cancer.
Thank You.”
