$27 million to unlock the power of genomics – Rare Cancers Australia

“We welcome Health Minister the Honorable Mark Butler MP’s announcement yesterday of more than $27 million to unlock the power of genomics.

The funding will go towards eight projects intended to improve cancer detection and treatment using genomics, aiming to:

•  detect and diagnose cancer earlier
•  better identify types of cancer
•  use targeted therapies to improve outcomes.

The funding, from the Medical Research Future Fund, includes:

•  $3 million to the University of Melbourne to work on the next generation of liquid biopsies for breast cancer.
•  $1.7 million to Monash University researchers to develop a liquid biopsy for multiple myeloma.
•  more than $2.5 million to Macquarie University to develop a liquid biopsy test for melanoma to help determine which patients need further treatment.
•  almost $3 million to the Council of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research to investigate findings that every bowel cancer is unique based on its genomic make-up, and to personalise treatments.
•  $8 million to develop a national platform to use AI technology in the diagnosis of severe genetic diseases.

It is great news to see this recognition and investment in genomics to transform health outcomes.”
