“At Children’s Cancer Institute, we believe that a life should be long. That every child should have the chance to grow up and grow old. To plan exciting futures, chase their dreams, and fulfil their potential.
But cancer cuts life short for hundreds of children every year, before they’ve even had a chance to make their mark.
Here in Australia, more than 1000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every single year. Today, thanks to medical research, over 80% of children will survive their disease. But life is never the same again.
Not only do they deal with the ever-present threat of the cancer returning, two thirds will also face the prospect of serious long-term health problems caused by the very treatment that saved their life, including organ dysfunction, neurocognitive deficits, impaired fertility, and secondary cancers.
Everything we do at Children’s Cancer Institute is about helping more kids with cancer not only survive, but go on to live long, healthy lives.
As the only independent medical research institute in Australia wholly dedicated to childhood cancer, our role is vital.
Childhood cancer is not simply adult cancer in a child. Cancers in children are often different in their causes, the way they grow and spread, and how they respond to treatment. Yet almost all cancer treatments used in children today were actually developed for adults.
We need to pioneer safer, more targeted treatments for children with cancer. And that is exactly what we’re doing. We wont stop until every child can live a long, happy and healthy life.
