“WHO/Europe’s new landmark report on the Commercial Determinants of noncommunicable diseases reveals the extent of harmful commercial practices and how they drive chronic diseases.
Resistance by industry to health protection policies has grown more sophisticated over time.
Public health professionals need new tools and skills to meet the commercial determinants challenge and safeguard public health.
A new cadre of public health professionals will:
- build coalitions around shared values of equity, sustainability and societal wellbeing
- understand economic and legal frameworks, including trade & investment agreements
- recognise common industry tactics like lobbying, targeted marketing, and misleading Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives
- develop mechanisms to enforce transparency and manage conflicts of interest
