Wafik S. El-Deiry: Raising awareness about burdens in academic medicine

“Raising awareness about burdens in academic medicine
Well, the email cannot be ignored as the “training” is required. I have not forgotten the last “required training” on the topic. In fact, I’m an expert on the topic who would rather spend time doing research to find new treatments for cancer and to bring them to patients. However, the current system is automated and sends reminders around the clock 24-7 365 days a year. The ongoing training requirements are burdensome especially when duplicative at university and health system. In 2024, for physician-scientists in academia who try to do science and medicine, it has become very difficult to get work done with constant requirements and distractions such as this one. This is not to mention difficulties with obtaining research funding where we are constantly writing grants that around 90% of the time don’t get funded. Is this what our community wants? Is this optimal for medical science in academia in the US? The system is badly broken, unfortunately and not being fixed by those who could address the issues.”
