Rasha Aboelhassan: How to control burnout?
Rasha Aboelhassan, Senior Oncology Consultant at Nasser Institute Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A few years ago, I met a great oncologist with a perfect personality:
He was a perfect doctor, always updated, and did never say no for any requests by senior staff, give cancer patients time to talk, hear their complaints, he partipate in oncology meetings and pass all exams perfectly.
After few months of working as young oncologist, this great doctor had sickness leave for two days and returned to work, but with different personality:
He can’t finish any duty we give to him, do not participate in any conversation, even scientific ones.
When I asked him Why?
He said that can Not understand himself, but he decided that he couldn’t be an oncologist anymore.
At this time, I used to know how to diagnose burnout earlier? and began practicing to prevent it in simple ways which I give as advice for doctors in their early years, here’s a few of them:
- practice a hobby every day.
- take rest and relax between duties.
- give time to good nutrition, health, and exercise.
- engagement with family and friends away from the workplace.find the way for self growth, know your targets and go after them.
- learn to say No, if you can’t do it.
