When I was training in oncology, brain metastases from cancer were seen as the worst form of news, a terminal diagnosis
When I was training in oncology, brain metastases from cancer were seen as the worst form of news, a terminal diagnosis. Today, this is no longer true thanks to innovative multimodality treatments and clinical trials such as the window-of-opportunity program led by my neurosurgeon colleague Nelson Moss at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Just recently, I delivered the good news to one of my patients diagnosed with the deadly small cell lung cancer and brain metastases that he is now cancer-free for over 5 years! While these stories are still exceptions, but the list of such patients who beat brain metastasis is growing and by accelerating clinical trials we will turn these into the norm.
