Ben Garcia: The most important thing I wished I did more of as a grad student or postdoc
Ben Garcia, Professor and Head of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Department at Washington University in St. Louis, School of Medicine, made the following post:
“Trainees today asked me what was the most important thing I wished I did more of as a grad student or postdoc? Hands down, networking. Science is a small world, and you never know when a small conversation you had with someone you just met somewhere will come back to help you down the road. Even now, I try to meet some new people I never did before at conferences. Additionally, I write tons of letters for appts/promotions, or even permanent residency applications, and I would not write these if I did not know the person at least a little.”
