Rachel Hoover: Nurses taught me how to practice medicine in the trenches
Heitham Hassoun, Chief Executive, International at Cedars-Sinai, shared a post by Rachel Hoover, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, on LinkedIn, adding the following:
“Great post Rachel Hoover—surgery internship was my steepest learning curve in life, chief resident was the lab for lifelong leadership, and both were anchored by my colleague nurses in those trenches who gave us the wisdom and the energy to carry on.”
Quoting Rachel Hoover’s post:
“For many years I started my days, in the early hours, walking down the hall to the ICUs and wards to round on patients. Those first days and months of practicing medicine as a PA we’re filled with a profound respect for the responsibility of caring for others and gratitude for the mentorship of physicians, nurses and other APPs and providers.
Most importantly, the nurses were my guide, they were the trusted advisors who provided wisdom from years of experience and who gave me confidence to use my knowledge. They were by my side in the ORs and in the middle of the night on call. I watched them do this over and over again with the incoming waves of new graduates and learners of all stages of training. Nurses taught me how to practice medicine in the trenches. Those nurses were the first people I saw each day and I will never forget the gifts they gave me. Happy Nurses Week.”
