Laura Vater: In the three years a resident trains, they spend >2,000 hours in the electronic medical record
Laura Vater, GI oncologist at IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on X:
“In the three years a resident trains, they spend >2,000 hours in the electronic medical record. That’s nearly 8 months.
11 weeks of chart review
10 weeks of note writing
5 weeks on order entry
Just let that sink in.
We must find ways to spend more time with patients and less time with the screen. Fewer EHR clicks for common workflows. Fewer emails and EHR inbox notifications. More support with scribes.
