Amil Družić : Clinic of Oncology at the Clinical center University of Sarajevo became part of the IWWD

“I’m excited to share that the Clinic of Oncology at the Clinical center University of Sarajevo recently became part of the International Watch & Wait Database (IWWD) for rectal cancer. This project, led by the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal, and EURECCA, aims to collect retrospective and prospective data to provide a clear understanding of the risks and benefits of organ-preserving strategies. The program focuses on patients with rectal cancer who achieve a complete clinical response (cCR) after neoadjuvant therapy.
As a sub-investigator for the IWWD, my recent visit to the Champalimaud Foundation was a valuable experience. I’m grateful for Dr. Laura Fernández’s detailed walkthrough of the Watch & Wait program and its approach to patient follow-ups. Seeing the compassionate and innovative way they implement this program firsthand was enlightening.
The research and studies they shared were comprehensive and have sparked some fresh ideas for potential collaborations and research opportunities. The depth of their work is impressive.
I’d also like to thank Dr. José Moreira de Azevedo for the engaging tour, Dr. Miguel Simas from Radiotherapy Department for his insights, and Professor Amjad Parvaiz for a delightful coffee chat. Your hospitality made the visit even more memorable.
Looking forward to more collaborations to improve outcomes for patients globally!”
