“Our residents at UCLA experienced a truly engaging lecture about SCLC this morning by Jie Deng. It included an innovative approach to Socratic teaching using our remote lecture platform (Zoom).

Everyone was invited to anonymize themselves to be more comfortable responding to Socratic questions in front of the group. I couldn’t help but crack up when she called on Dolphin or Panda with a technical question.

As an immunologist, she prioritized ensuring our residents could recall FDA-approved drug names by their class and asked them to post their responses in the chat. This approach is much more engaging than listing drug names on a slide and then clicking to move on to the next slide.

I was impressed by this approach and am sold. It proved to me that virtual lectures (new school) can actually be more effective than in-person (old school).
