Megan-Claire Chase: April is National Minority Health Month

Megan-Claire Chase, Breast Cancer Program Director at SHARE Cancer Support, shared on their LinkedIn:

”April is National Minority Health Month.

Huge thanks to Bayer Oncology for amplifying my voice below! My views about clinical trials have changed over the years from fear and suspicion to being informed and empowered.

It’s so important that our doctors BELIEVE us when we report rare side effects or ones that have never been reported and not dismiss it. Too many medications that are used today do not reflect us in the research.

That is part of my story once I entered the survivorship stage and began my post-treatment meds to help prevent a recurrence. We tried FIVE different medications and I had severe/rare side effects with each one. My second opinion oncologist LISTENED and BELIEVED me. He finally admitted that I was ‘outside of his expertise’ and sent me to a colleague at a competing cancer center.

As frustrating and painful as that time was, I will always feel grateful for that oncologist for their respect and belief in my experiences on these medications.”
