Mark Grigoryan: I am happy to share our recent article ‘A Case Series of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis: An Atypical Presentation of Visceral Leishmaniasis’

Mark Grigoryan, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellow at Yerevan State Medical University, shared on LinkedIn:

“I am happy to share our recent article ‘A Case Series of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis: An Atypical Presentation of Visceral Leishmaniasis’ published in Cureus.

Part of a collaboration with Dr. Saten Hovhannisyan and Dr. Violeta Manukyan, this case series explores the importance of early diagnosis of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).
Special thanks to my supervisor Dr. Hripsime Apresyan, for her guidance and mentorship.

Key take-home messages include:
1. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a parasitic vector-borne disease endemic in Armenia.

2. Rarely VL can cause secondary HLH, a life-threatening condition requiring early recognition and treatment.

3. Continuation of liposomal amphotericin B treatment beyond the standard total dose of 21 mg/kg is warranted in cases of disease relapse, treatment failure associated with HLH, and immunosuppression.

I want to extend our gratitude to the pediatric infectious disease team and the entire medical staff of Muratsan University Hospital Complex. I appreciate their invaluable contributions to diagnosis and treatment, as well as their compassionate care for our patients.”
