Stacey Tinianov: QUESTION For those with a diagnosis or history of cancer

Stacey Tinianov, Vice President of Patient Advocacy and Engagement at

“QUESTION: For those with a diagnosis or history of cancer, what is (or was) the thing you MOST needed/wanted from your care team during the shitshow that is a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship?

I’ll go first.

Above all else, I needed/wanted to be seen, heard, and held as a WHOLE person, not just a ‘cancer patient’. I felt like only someone who saw me as a mother, a wife, a professional, a recreational athlete, a lover of the outdoors, a coffee lover – as all of the things that make me ME – would be able to help me navigate all the things on the horizon.
It’s not that way for everyone, I’m sure, so I’m interested – what’s the ONE THING you needed/wanted?

[The backstory on this post is that I just received a text from a friend, who is also an oncology nurse. She reminded me that I shared this with her almost a decade ago, and she has never forgotten it. She saw a women with a new diagnosis the other day and just sat with her and listened. And, she was the first person to do so. And yes, I am in tears, but it’s a good cry.]”
