Olubukola Ayodele: The annual London Global Cancer Week by the United Kingdom and Ireland Global Cancer Network

Olubukola Ayodele, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Leicester Cancer Research Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Cancer networks play a crucial role in reducing health disparities by supporting research collaborations between high-income and low-income countries. These networks focus on locally relevant cancers and address resource limitations. (See link to my recent editorial on this)

The United Kingdom and Ireland Global Cancer Network (UKIGCN) UKI Global Cancer Network is an example of such a network that has been organizing the annual London Global Cancer Week for the last six years. The Week is a diverse series of 30-40 individual meetings that are presented by a range of hosts committed to improving cancer outcomes globally, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The sessions showcase progress made by various initiatives worldwide across the cancer continuum and encourage coherence in policymaking at national and international levels by providing space for holistic discussions. An important aspect of the week is to act as a catalyst for change that benefits people affected by cancer in LMICs.

The UKIGCN has a Nigerian subgroup that is dedicated to improving cancer outcomes in Nigeria. The subgroup is involved in several capacity-building projects in Nigeria and is open to welcoming new members. If you are an individual in the United Kingdom or Ireland who is passionate about making long-lasting, impactful improvements to cancer care in Nigeria, this is an excellent opportunity for you to contribute. Please feel free to contact me for more information.

The fight against cancer cannot be won in isolation. It demands a united front, a global collaboration that transcends borders and diverse communities in a shared purpose.”
