CAR T cells can gain new vigor when engineered to have high levels of a particular protein – Cancer Research Institute

“Bioengineered immune cells have been shown to attack and even cure cancer, but often become exhausted over time. Researchers including former CRI Fellow Dr. Junyun Lai of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre have now demonstrated that CAR T cells can gain new vigor when engineered to have high levels of a particular protein. These boosted CAR T cells have gene activity similar to that of stem cells, and a rejuvenated ability to fend off cancer.
