“The majority of the world’s children with cancer live in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs) where resources to diagnose and treat these children are limited. Collaboration is paramount to address such daunting challenges.

The American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO), Global Special Interest Group, led by Nmazuo Ozuah and Ben Watkins, and the International Society of Paediatric Oncology – SIOP, North America Global Health Committee, led by Cesar Nunez and me, are two groups trying to create awareness and contribute to solutions for childhood cancer and blood disorders in LMICs.

Aspho2024 provided the opportunity for these groups to convene and have discussions on how we can collaborate going forward.”

Jeremy Slone is an Associate Member of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with the Hospitalist Medicine Program and the Department of Global Pediatric Medicine. His career has focused on pursuing equity in the diagnosis and treatment of all children with cancer and blood disorders, through program development, capacity building, and epidemiology research. For over a decade, Dr. Slone has engaged with local partners in multiple African countries including Botswana where he worked for nine years, living there for seven years, collaborating with the government and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive national pediatric hematology-oncology program.
