Standard bladder-cancer resection is conventionally performed by resecting the tumour piecemeal. En bloc resection of bladder tumours has been proposed as an alternative technique.
At AUA23, Dr Jeremy Teoh presented the results of the EB-StaR Study, a multicentre randomised, phase 3 trial of transurethral en bloc versus standard resection for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
The primary study outcome was the 1-year recurrence rate. This was 28.5% en bloc (n=143) vs 38.1% standard resection (n=133), demonstrating a statistically significant (p=0.007) benefit for en bloc.
For the secondary outcome of 1-year progression rate, no disease progression was seen in the en bloc patients, compared to 2.6% of the standard resection group.
